A chocolate bar isn’t exactly the food you’d turn to for nutritional value, but the new limited edition Taste the Future chocolate snack bar from Finnish food experience company Fazer could change that. Taste the Future is the first snack that contains Solein, a new sustainable protein ingredient whose slogan is “food out of thin air”. Taking the form of a mustard-hued powder, Solein is produced using air-captured carbon dioxide and electricity, which essentially means it requires no form of traditional agriculture.
Taste The Future tastes much like any other dark chocolate snack bar. Actually, it tastes better than the average dark chocolate snack bar with its rich, smooth creaminess and deep chocolatey flavour. Made with 70 per cent dark chocolate, the bar is studded with oat puffs, hazelnuts, and dried strawberries, with Solein contributing nutrition in the form of iron and protein rather than flavour since it doesn’t have much flavour of its own.
“Many snack products don’t contain high amounts of iron (which Solein has), which is an important nutrient for people on a vegan diet. This isn’t something you find in a typical chocolate snack bar,” said Heli Anttila, vice president of new product development at Fazer Confectionery.
The introduction of Taste the Future marks the first time the public can try Solein in a snack bar. Singapore is the only country in the world to have given Solein regulatory approval, with approval in the European Union and North America expected to follow within the year, said Pasi Vainikka, CEO of Solar Foods, which makes Solein.
“With this introduction in Singapore, we are getting valuable feedback on Solein’s viability in a new product category and get a sense of the consumer acceptance of future ingredients,” Vainikka added.
The Taste the Future chocolate snack bar will be given to customers who buy S$30 worth of Fazer products at selected The Cocoa Tree stores from now till end of February. The company hopes consumers will provide feedback on their tasting experience using the QR code provided on its packaging.
