Hong Kong movie superstar Tony Leung clinched the award for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards on Friday (Mar 15) for his role in the crime drama, The Goldfinger.
The 61-year-old actor won for playing Cheng Yiyan, the morally questionable chairman of a Hong Kong conglomerate who’s the subject of an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) investigation spanning 15 years. The character is modelled after Carrian Group’s chairman George Tan.
The Goldfinger also stars Andy Lau, Charlene Choi and Simon Yam.
Leung received the award from Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To, who said on stage, “I have known Tony Leung for 40 years and knew he was good, but I didn’t know he was so good”.
Leung said in an interview that the award was a form of recognition and encouragement and he was happy to receive it from To.
The Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards is regarded as a precursor for the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), taking place on Apr 14. This win makes Leung the frontrunner for Best Actor at the HKFA.
For the upcoming HKFA, Leung is up against Dayo Wong from A Guilty Conscience, Bowie Lam from In Broad Daylight, Lo Chun Yip from Time Still Turns The Pages and Da Peng from Dust To Dust.
Other winners of the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards include Hong Kong actress Jennifer Yu, who won Best Actress for playing an investigative journalist who went undercover to expose abuse in a nursing home in the drama In Broad Daylight.
The Best Picture award went to legal drama A Guilty Conscience, while Soi Cheang took home the Best Director trophy for mystery crime thriller Mad Fate.
