Trailer Watch: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu Dazzle In First Footage Of Barbie
With Margot Robbie earning praises for her performance in Damian Chazelle’s 1920s Hollywood tribute Babylon, Warner Bros thought this would be a good time to drop a first-look of Robbie’s highly-anticipated movie based on the iconic fashion doll Barbie.
The 74-sec teaser doesn’t say much about the plot: it starts off with a parody of the ape sequence in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (complete with Richard Strauss’ ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’), but with the simians replaced by doll-playing girls. It then cuts to colourful scenes of Barbie (Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling — you’ll never look at him the same way after this) trapped in the real world. There’s also a glimpse of Simu Liu showing off his dance moves. From the looks of it, expect a lot of pink.
Barbie — directed by Little Women’s Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach — also stars Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Emerald Fennell, Emma Mackey and Kate McKinnon. The movie opens in cinemas on July 20. Watch the teaser below:
