Stuff to watch this week (Apr 3-9, 2023)
Star Awards 2023
The Star Awards returns to Marina Bay Sands for the first time since 2013! Will Richie Koh take home Best Actor for his role as a young man with an intellectual disability in Your World in Mine, which has already won Best Drama Serial? And Koh’s co-star Hong Ling beat out veterans Zoe Tay, Huang Bireng and Rebecca Lim for Best Actress? (Click here for the complete list of nominees.) Place your bets. Elsewhere, 75 artistes — 36 females and 39 males — instead of 40, will compete for a coveted spot in the ‘Top 10 Most Popular Male/Female Artistes’. Another change: the inaugural Most Popular Rising Star Award, which will be handed out to three artistes who have been in showbiz for five years or less (aka not jaded yet), and have secured the most fan votes. Hong Kong’s Sammi Cheng and Taiwan’s Jam Hsiao are skedded to present and perform, while Matilda Tao and Lee Teng are the MCs.

Circle Line
Singapore’s first creature-feature — which pits Jesseca Liu and Peter Yu against a scaly monster in the transit tunnel network — is a commendable effort albeit a tad underwhelming. Let’s put it this way: Jaws is evidence that you can have a s**** monster (damn you, Bruce!) and still terrify audiences. Circle Line never really got that far.

She’s a Terrorist and I Love Her
Remember HOOQ, that short-lived streamer which bellied-up in 2020? Don’t worry, not many do. She’s a Terrorist and I Love Her, a dark comedy from YouTubers Ministry of Funny — about a guy (Haresh Tilani) who hooks up with an anti-capitalism cultist plotting to attack Singapore — was one of the original HOOQ shows released before the platform shuttered. After that, the eight-ep show — which also starred Benjamin Kheng, Caitanya Tan, Noah Yap and Munah Bagharib — ended up in limbo, and the creators took a while to reacquire the rights and made it available on YouTube. Beef
This 10-part dramedy follows the aftermath of a road rage incident between a struggling handyman (Steven Yeun) and a plant artist (Ali Wong). Instead of letting things go, these Angelinos let their anger get the better of them, leading to an internecine feud that not only consumes them but their friends and loved ones as well. Chill, people. Hey, Mediacorp commissioners, how come we can’t come up with a show like this? We see this kind of stuff all the time on Mothership and SG Road Vigilante. Just saying.

Boom! Boom! The World vs Boris Becker
