Much-loved Korean romance drama Full House, is getting a Chinese movie remake but it seems like Chinese netizens aren’t too pleased with it.

Full House, which first aired in 2004, was an instant hit, and starred Korean singer-actor Rain and Korean actress Song Hye Kyo, who were 22 and 23 respectively back then.

Full House was remade into a Chinese drama in 2020.

In 2020, Chinese video streaming site Tencent Video shot their own remake of Full House, titled Midsummer Is Full Of Love. It starred 27-year-old Chinese actor Timmy Xu and 24-year-old Chinese singer-actress Yang Chaoyue, and was fairly well-received.

Now, two years on, there will be another Chinese remake, only this time, the production team took quite a fair bit of liberty when it comes to adapting the story.

For one, the two leads are no longer in their twenties. Instead, they’ve been rewritten so that they’re in their thirties. The male lead will be played by 41-year-old Korean-American model-actor Dennis Oh, and Chinese actress Zhang Li, 38.

It's not that bad, right?

On Oct 19, filming for the movie remake officially started, and netizen comments began pouring in.

“Even if you have money, this isn’t how you should be spending it. Dennis was really handsome when he was younger, but now, he has a really strong ‘old uncle vibe’. The combined age of the two leads almost adds up to 80. The movie industry is already struggling, why are you remaking works like this?” one disgruntled netizen asked in a post.

“They’re too old, and they’re still filming an idol drama [remake]. I’m not saying that being old is bad, but it’s just that getting people who are turning 40 soon to play the role of a twenty-something doesn’t feel right,” another wrote.

Yay or nay?

Of course, there were those who disagreed with these netizens too. One wrote that Dennis “looks as handsome as ever”, adding that the actor exudes a “mature charm”.

Another commented that Zhang Li “does not look a day over 30”, and expressed their excitement for the final product.
